33DC Day 4: Tribal

Hi dear readers !

Today, I was both pleased and worried by the 33DC theme, which is tribal nails.
Pleased, because that's something I really love. Worried, because I've never done any tribal pattern and I'm sooo bad with free hand drawing (especially when it involves straight lines)

So I decided to make it easier for me and tried something I've never done before: nail polish decals !
Let's see the result, then I'll explain you everything :) Oh, and sorry for the awkward hand pose, this is my right hand ! I totally messed the left hand up, while the right one was okay (that's nonsense as I'm right handed), so I took pics of the "good" hand ;)

For the base, I did a simple sponge gradient using Catrice Salmon & Garfunkel, China Glaze Something Sweet and OPI Rumple's Wiggin.

Now for the decals. You'll need a sheet of plastic or wax paper, a clear polish (or a top coat, I would avoid quick drying ones as I'm not sure about how they'd react with plastic), a permanent marker, a ruler, scissors, and free time.
I started by creating a long stripe of clear polish on the plastic sheet, I made it long and large enough to cover my nails. Make it in one piece, you'll cut it later.
Once it was dry, I drawed the tribal pattern directly on the clear polish. I used a ruler because I totally suck at drawing straight lines, even on paper haha :D
I let the ink sit for one hour to be sure it was dry, then I peeled off the polish stripe I started to cut it in pieces to fit my nails.
Proceeding one nail at once, I added a thin coat of clear polish on my nails, then I stuck the pieces of pattern and ended with a coat of Seche Vite to protect the design.

What I learned doing that, is you have to apply the decals very carefully, and try to apply them with the ink facing the nail, so it won't bleed when you apply your last coat of top coat.
I had to learn it the bad way, that's how I ruined my left hand !

That's all for today, I hope you like it ! I also hope my explanations are clear enough, maybe I should make a tutorial with pictures for that, what do you think ?

Le thème du jour du 33DC, Tribal, m'a fait plaisir et peur à la fois !
Plaisir, parce que j'adore ces motifs. Peur, parce que je n'en avais jamais fait avant, et je suis toujours aussi mauvaise au dessin à main levée sur les ongles (surtout quand ça implique de faire des lignes droites)

J'ai donc décidé de me faciliter la vie et ai essayé quelque chose de nouveau pour moi: les décals au vernis !

Pour la base, c'est un gradient classique avec 3 couleurs: Salmon & Garfunkel de Catrice, Something Sweet de China Glaze et Rumple's Wiggin d'OPI.

Passons aux décals. Si vous voulez vous lancer, vous aurez besoin d'une feuille de plastique ou de papier sulfurisé, un vernis transparent (ou un top coat, j'éviterais juste les tops à séchage rapide car je ne sais pas si ils réagissent avec le plastique), un marqueur indélébile, des ciseaux, une latte, et du temps libre.

J'ai commencé par faire une longue bande de vernis transparent sur le plastique; assez large et longue pour couvrir tous mes ongles. Je l'ai fait en une pièce, pour la couper plus tard.
Une fois la bande sèche, j'ai dessiné le motif tribal sur toute la longueur avec mon marqueur. J'ai utilisé une latte parce que même à plat, je suis pas douée pour les lignes droits xD
J'ai laissé sécher l'encre une heure environ, histoire d'être sûre que c'était sec, puis j'ai décollé la bande du plastique et commencé à couper des morceaux ajustés à mes ongles.
Procédant un ongle à la fois, j'y ai appliqué une fine couche de top coat, puis j'ai collé les bouts de motif tribal et j'ai terminé avec une couche de Seche Vite pour protéger le tout.

Ce que j'ai appris de cette technique, c'est qu'il faut poser les motifs avec l'encre côté ongle, sinon l'encre risque de couler quand on pose le top coat ! C'est ce qui est arrivé à ma main gauche, et c'est pourquoi aujourd'hui vous voyez ma main droite (et ses poses bizarres) !

Gradient & Stripes with Enas Plates

So, I finally tried my Enas plates ! I had them for a while but didn't use them until now.
If you don't know about that stmping system, I invite you to check this page so you can get familiar with the system. The rubber stamp allows you to remove some parts of the design, add different colors etc. It lets the polish dry slower than usual Konad-like plates so you can play with it easily.

For my first try, I went with something simple, with only one color. At first, I used my recent Konad polish but it wasn't thick enough and my design was sheer (though my black Konad polish works very well with classical plates).
So I picked my old black Konad polish, which is so thick I can't use it anymore with plates. It worked very well with the Enas system.

Here are my pics, I'm not very proud of the result ! My middle finger is such a mess ! That happened because my hand shook when I applied the stamp. I think I need to get used to the Enas system !

I started with a gradient combo that I love, using Essence Fruit Punch and Gabriella. Then I stamped the stripes and waited almost an hour to add top coat. The stamping is so thick, I was afraid the design would smudge if it wasn't dry enough !

I can't say I'm really convinced with that stamping system. Sure I have to work my method and get used to it, but I feel like using way much more polish than with classical plates ! You have to cover the entire design with polish where, with normal plates, you can simply put a few polish on the border of the pattern then scrape to fill de design with polish.
And, as you have to stamp on paper to remove the excess polish, you definitely lose it.

I'll definitely try them again, and play with multiple colour patterns as that's what they're meant to be used for, but I'll probably never like them as much as Konad-like plates :)

J'ai enfin testé mes plaques Enas ! Je les ai depuis un petit moment, mais je ne les avais pas encore utilisées.
Si vous ne connaissez pas cette marque, je vous invite à visiter cette page pour vous familiariser avec la chose. Le tampon en caoutchouc permet d'enlever certaines parties du motif, d'ajouter des couleurs différentes, etc ... Ce système fait sécher le vernis moins vite qu'une plaque classique genre Konad, on peut donc prendre un peu plus de temps pour jouer avec.

Pour mon premier essai cependant, j'ai fait au plus simple, avec une seule couleur. Au début, j'ai essayé d’utiliser mon flacon de vernis Konad noir le plus récent, mais il n'était pas assez épais et mon stamping était un peu transparent (alors que mon noir fonctionne très bien avec les plaques classiques). Je me suis rabattue sur mon vieux vernis Konad noir, qui lui est tellement épais que je ne peux plus l'utiliser pour du stamping. Résultat, il a était parfait pour les plaques Enas ! En contrepartie, je me dis que ça doit vachement limiter le choix des vernis hors vernis spéciaux.

Je ne suis pas très fière du résultat, comme vous pouvez le voir mon majeur est tout dégoûtant. Ca vient du fait que ma main a un peu tremblé au moment d'apposer le motif. Je pense que j'ai besoin de plus d'entraînement !

J'ai démarré avec un gradient avec des couleurs que j'aime associer, Fruit Punch et Gabriella, tous deux d'Essence. Ensuite j'ai appliqué mes motifs, et j'ai attendu quasiment une heure pour que tout soit bien sec avant d'appliquer mon top coat: le motif stampé était tellement épais que j'ai eu peur de le ruiner avec le Seche Vite !

Je ne peux pas dire que je suis convaincue par ce système. Bien sûr, je dois encore faire des essais et m'y habituer, mais j'ai surtout l'impression d'utiliser beaucoup plus de vernis qu'avec des plaques métalliques ! Ici, il faut recouvrir entièrement et rigoureusement le motif, alors qu'avec les plaques classiques on peut se contenter d'un trait de vernis au bord du dessin, que l'on étalera en raclant.
Et vu qu'il faut tamponner le motif sur du papier avant de l'utiliser pour enlever le surplus de vernis, tout est perdu ! Ca me donne une sensation de gaspillage que je n'aime pas :/

Je ne baisse pas les bras, je réutiliserai mes plaques Enas, surtout pour les motifs multicolors (après tout, c'est à ça qu'elles servent avant tout), mais je ne les aimerai probablement autant que les classiques de chez Konad ou autres :)

Et vous, vous avez essayé ces plaques en caoutchouc ? Vous en pensez quoi ?

Nails Inc Feathers - York

I don't do a lot of swatches here as many bloggers do it better than I, but this time I didn't feel like adding nail art to this combo. It was already overloaded haha :)

While in France last month, I found some polishes from the Feathers collection by Nails Inc. This collection consists in a clear base loaded with tons of bar glitters. I couldn't resist and brought two of them at home !

One of them is York, it contains orange and white glitters and this is the one I'll show you today :)

I did one coat of Nails Inc York over two coats of Essence Mr. Big.
York is very dense, so I could have made it opaque on it's own with two or maybe three coats, but I wanted to add a third color to this flashy, fruity combo !

It was easy to work with, but this kind of glitter doesn't apply like your usual polish. I prefer to pat the brush on the nails, moving glitters when necessary, remove those that go in the cuticle or beyond the nail border.
I forgot to use my peel off base before I applied York, so when I was a bit afraid when I had to remove it, but finally it was easy with the foil method :)

The other shade I had is Brighton, it has the same bar glitters in yellow and turquoise and it really looks like Floam (except Floam is wayyy brighter ^^).

Do you like that kind of glitter ?

Habituellement, je ne poste pas vraiment de swatches ici, parce que d'autres le font bien mieux que moi, mais cette fois je n'avais pas envie d'ajouter un nail art à ce combo, déjà bien chargé ;)

Quand je suis allée en France le mois passé, j'ai trouvé quelques vernis de la collection Feathers, de Nails Inc. Cette collection se compose de bases transparentes, bourrées de paillettes "bâtonnets" dans des couleurs variées et vives. Je n'ai pas pu résister, j'en ai ramené deux à la maison !

L'un d'entre eux est York, composé de paillettes oranges et blanches. C'est lui que e vous présente aujourd'hui :)

J'ai posé une couche de Nails Inc York par dessus deux couches d'Essence Mr Big.
York est vraiment dense, et j'aurais pu le rendre opaque en appliquant directement deux ou trois couches sur ma base transparente, mais j'avais envie d'ajouter une troisème couleur à ce mélange déjà flashy et fruité !

C'est un vernis facile à travailler, mais il ne s'applique pas comme un vernis classique en "peignant" simplement l'ongle; je préfère tapoter le pinceau sur tout l'ongle, en arrangeant les paillettes là où c'est nécessaire, retirant celles qui s'installent près les cuticules et repoussant celles qui dépassent du bord libre.

J'ai oublié de mettre une base spéciale paillettes et j'ai eu très peur au moment d'enlever ce vernis, mais avec la technique des papillotes c'est parti tout seul !

L'autre couleur que j'ai achetée est Brighton, composée de paillettes bâtonnets jaunes et turquoises. Il ressemble vraiment à Floam, sauf que ce dernier est bien plus vif :)

Messy Splatter Manicure

Today's manicure is a messy one :)
I wanted to do a splatter nail art with the straw method, and I planned to use orange and bright pink over a white base, some nice summer-y colors to call for the sun. When it was done, I wasn't sure to like it so I started to add yellow and blue all over. Finally, I decided to add some black for a contrast, and threw again some of the others colors over the black so it didn't look too dark.

The result was a real mess, but I really loved it ! I think it's a bit special and I'm not sure everyone will like it, so I'm waiting for your advices :)
I still plan to do a softer splatter manicure soon ;)

The white base was done with OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls. The others I splattered are Kiko 279, Kiko 356, OPI Koala Bear-y, China Glaze Shower Together and Essence Fatal.

Le nail art d'aujourd'hui est quelque peu ... désordonné :)
J'avais prévu de faire un splatter à la paille avec de l'orange et du rose vif sur une base blanche, des couleurs qui rappellent un peu l'été pour appeler le soleil. Une fois terminée, je n'étais pas sûre d'apprécier, donc j'ai ajouté un peu de bleu et de jaune. Finalement, j'ai ajouté du noir pour le contraste, et j'ai remis un peu de chaque couleur pour que ce noir ne domine pas.

Le résultat était un vrai fouillis, mais j'ai adoré ! C'est un peu spécial, je ne suis pas certaine que tout le monde aime ce genre, donc je compte sur vous pour me donner vos avis ;)
Et je compte refaire une splatter prochainement, en version plus sage cette fois ^^

La base blanche est faite avec My Boyfriend Scales Wales d'OPI. Les autres couleurs sont Kiko 279, Kiko 356, OPI Koala Bear-y, China Glaze Shower Together et Essence Fatal.

Fake Tattoos - Summer Sunset

This week will be a special one, as all the posts will be dedicated to my reviews of Fake Tattoos nail decals :)
I was contacted by Ana, the marketing assistant of this Swedish company a few weeks ago, and after a quick look on their website, I couldn't resist to accept reviewing their stuff.
Fake Tattoo is specialised in ... well, fake tattoos for the body. They recently launched a range of smaller tattoos for the nails, but you can also use them on your skin. Their tattoos are safe, non toxic and hypoallergenic.

Shipping was extremely fast. I accepted the review on a thursday, and the next monday, my tattoos were there !

I got a sample of their whole nail range, which means one sheet of each serie (6 series in total), but if you buy a serie you will get two sheets.
Here's what I got:

As you can see, there is a nice choice of designs and I think every one can find something they'll like :) The texts are cut so you can put two or three letters on each nail to create a phrase (the hidden text on the first sheet from the second picture says "Be the change!')

Let's see what I did, I'll give you much more info about the tattoos after :)

The pretty trees inspired me to create a sunset gradient, and I added a bird that suited the rest of the mani.

I started with a white base (H&M Pure White) than sponged my gradient with the following polishes: OPI Suzi Says Feng Shui, Catrice Lucky in Lilac, OPI Pink Flamenco, Kiko 356 and 279. Then I applied the tattoos !

The instructions are printed on the back of each sheet and are very easy to follow.
- Cut the desired image, remove the plastic protection sheet
- Apply it on your nail. It will stick immediatly, so be sure to place it well. Unlike water decals, you won't be allowed to move and adjust the position once it's on the nails.
- Apply a wet paper towel (or wet cotton ball/pad) on the paperback and wait a few seconds. When the paperback starts to slide away, you can remove it.
- Let the tattoo dry a few minutes and apply a thin layer of top coat.

Isn't it easy ?
Now I've tried a few different designs (which you'll see later this week), I can say that I had no problem at all to apply them, no bad surprise when removing the paperback, and they lasted as long as my manicures did.
I'm really happy with this product !

The only bad point in my opinion is you can't see exactly where're you're sticking the tattoo, so you'll have to be more precise and patient to place it. Otherwise, the result is very pretty, with no visible demarcation line (as it happens sometimes with water decals or stickers) and the tattoo is merged with your polish base. You could almost believe I hand painted these, if only I had freehand skills haha :D

Cette semaine sera un peu spéciale, car elle sera consacrée entièrement à mes reviews des nail decals de Fake Tattoos :)

J'ai été contactée par Ana, l'assistante marketing de cette société suédoise il y a quelques semaines, et après un rapide coup d'oeil à leur site, je n'ai pu qu'accepter de faire un compte rendu de leurs produits.
Fake Tattoo est spécialisé en ... faux tatouages, vous vous en doutiez ^^ Ils ont récemment lancé une gamme de tattos plus petits, pour les ongles, mais vous pouvez aussi les utiliser sur la peau. Ces tatouages sont non-toxiques et hypoallergéniques.

L'envoi a été extrèmement rapide ! J'ai accepté l'offre un jeudi, et le lundi suivant, les tattoos étaient déjà dans ma boîte aux lettres !

J'ai reçu un "échantillon" de leur gamme complète, soit une feuille de chaque série (il y a 6 séries au total), mais sachez que si vous en achetez, ce sont deux feuilles que vous recevrez.

Comme vous pouvez le voir, il y a un grand choix d'images et chacune peut y trouver son bonheur :) Les textes sont découpés de façon à placer deux ou trois lettres par ongle et former la phrase (la phrase à moitié cachée sur la seconde photo est "Be the change!)

J'ai été tout de suite inspirée par les jolis arbres, je les ai vus immédiatement dans un dégradé façon coucher de soleil, et j'ai ajouté un oiseau qui se mariait plutôt bien au reste de la manucure.

J'ai commencé avec une base blanche (Pure White de chez H&M), puis 'ai créé un dégradé à l'éponge avec les vernis suivants: OPI Suzi Says Feng Shui, Catrice Lucky in Lilac, OPI Pink Flamenco, Kiko 356 et 279. Et enfin j'ai appliqué les tattoos !

Les instructions sont imprimées à l'arrière des feuilles et sont très simples:
- Couper l'image désirée et enlever la feuille de protection plastifiée
- Appliquer sur l'ongle. Attention, ça colle immédiatement, faites attention de bien le placer. Contrairement aux water decals, il est impossible de faire bouger le motif pour l'ajuster.
- Appuyer sur le motif avec un papier absorbant humide (ou un bout de coton). Quand la partie cartonnée commence à glisser, vous pouvez l'enlever.
- Laisser sécher un peu le tattoo, puis appliquer une fine couche de top coat

Facile, n'est-ce pas ?
Maintenant que j'ai essayé plusieurs de leurs motifs (que vous verrez au fil de la semaine), je peux dire que je n'ai rencontré aucun problème pour les poser, pas de mauvaise surprise lors du retrait de la partie cartonnée, et ils ont duré aussi longtemps que les manucures.
Je suis vraiment ravie de ce produit !

Le seul point noir, à mes yeux, c'est qu'on ne peut pas voir exactement si le tattoo est bien positionnée, il faut donc être minutieux et un peu plus patiente qu'avec un water decal. A part ça, le résultat est vraiment agréable, pas de ligne de démarcation comme c'est le cas parfois avec des stickers/decals, le tattoo est vraiment bien fondu avec le vernis de base. On pourrait presque croire que j'ai peint ces décors, si seulement j'étais douée en dessin ahah :D

Chaque feuille de tattoos coûté 7€, les frais de port dépendent de votre pays (3€ pour l'Europe, 2£ pour l'Angleterre, 4$ pour les USA)
Le nombre de tattoos que vous recevez dépend de la série choisie, ça peut aller de 56 images à 82 images.

Summer Gradient & Hibiscus

I'm a bad blogger, I forgot to post yesterday ! Being off work doesn't help, it seems I tend to forget which day it is haha :p

Anyway, I have a mani that I loved a lot for you today!
Besides yellow, there are colors I don't use a lot (at all?) on my nails, I'm not a big fan of anything orange-y. That includes peach, corals and all those kind of colors. But I love gradients with orange and bright pink, so I decided it was time to use the only peach I have in my stash, Salmon & Garfunkel by Catrice !

I used it as the base of my sponge gradient, along with Flormar N003 and OPI Koala Bear-y. Then I stamped white hibiscus flowers with Konad special polish and Bundle Monster plate BM318.
Oooh, I loved the result a lot ! It's one my fave manicures ever !

I made this manicure 4 days ago and I still have on my nails, which is rare for me, but I love it so much :)

I wanted to show you the gradient on it's own, here it is:

It's a bit more bright in real life but my camera didn't want to pick the real colors.

What do you think ? Do you like bright pink mixed with orange or peach shades ? :)

Hello les filles :)

Je suis une mauvaise bloggeuse, j'ai oublié de poster mon billet du vendredi hier ! Le fait de ne pas travailler pour le moment n'aide pas, j'ai tendance à oublier quel jour on est lol :p

Pour me rattraper, j'ai une manucure que j'ai adorée à vous montrer aujourd'hui.
S'il y a des couleurs que je ne porte quasi jamais en dehors du jaune, ce sont bien les teintes orangées, corail, pêche, bref tout ce qui contient de l'orange en général. Je n'en suis pas vraiment fan.
Par contre j'adore les dégradés avec de l'orange et du rose vif, donc je me suis décidée à utiliser mon Salmon & Garfunkel de Catrice, le seul vernis pêche que je possède !

Je l'ai utilisé en base de mon dégradé à l'éponge, aux côtés du Flormar N003 et de l'OPI Koala Bear-y. Ensuite j'ai tamponné des hibiscus blancs avec un vernis Konad et la plaque BM318 de Bundle Monster.
J'ai A-DO-RÉ le résultat !


J'ai fait cette manucure il y a 4 jours et je la porte encore en ce moment, ce qui est rare pour moi, mais je l'aime vraiment beaucoup :)

Je voulais aussi vous montrer le dégradé tout seul.

L'ensemble est un peu plus lumineux, vif, en vrai mais mon appareil photo a fait des siennes.

Striping Tape Fun

Last week, a friend of mine got me the 4 bright colors from the Essence Season Extreme collection. I decided to have some fun with them all !
These four bright colors (yellow, purple, orange and pink) are really pretty and they have a jelly finish so I'm sure I'll make some sandwiches with them ! But this time I wanted to play with striping tape.
Here's what I did, read the end of the post for further info :)

That looked fun and pretty, I really loved the result even if there are still some flaws with the tape ...

To achieve this look, I first applied the four colors randomly. I made stripes, dots, french tips in an uneven way, I regret I didn't take a pic to show you how gross it was lol ! I was even afraid that it would not look good after the tape work ...
When my messy first coats were dry, I added striping tape in various patterns. I used the tape from Born Pretty Store I reviwed here. I love to use that tape, it has a good width for that kind of nail art, it adheres enough to stay on the border of the nails but it removes without tearing the polish off.

Then I applied one coat of black polish (Essence Black Out) and removed the tape. When the first hand was done, I added some Seche Vite and waited a few minutes before starting to add tape to the other hand. That way, my first hand is totally dry thanks to SV and I can work easier on the other hand.

If you want to know the name of the Essence polishes I used, here they are:
Bright Alert (pink)
Little Miss Bright (purple)
On the Bright Side (orange)
Pimp my Bright (yellow)
I guess Essence wanted us to know that those colors were BRIGHT ! ;)

Beach Manicure

Today, I'll exceptionally won't make a Pink Wednesday post, but be sure it will be back next week :)

On a board where I usually chat with friends, there are some polish and nail art fanatics and someone launched the idea to make monthly challenges between us. Nothing to win, just a simple theme to interpret each month. As I'm on holliday for the end of the challenge, it was decided that I post my manicure here on the last day of the month :)

The first theme came naturally during this summer: the beach !

Here's what I made ...

It's not a unique design, I've seen it many times on the web with different interpretations, but I'm really proud of it 'cause it turned out exactly like I wanted :)

And believe me, when I only had the sponged colors on the nails without top coat and palm tree, it wasn't really appealing ...

First, I painted my nails with two coats of Orly Blushing Bud. Then I sponged near the cuticles with the dark purple, Orly Wild Wisteria.
I continued with the orange, Essence Sun Downer. I really like this polish for sponging with bright colors :)

I added the yellow but gave it a round shape with the sponge, to remember the downing sun. I used Orly Lemonade (my only yellow lol) but it  was too bright so I added some Sun Downer again in light touches to make the yellow a bit more realistic.
I applied a first coat of Seche Vite to make the surface smooth and ready for stamping, then I used the palm tree from Konad plate m29 and special polish in black.
Finally I sponged some black (Essence fatal) at the base of the palms, added a coat of Seche Vite and it was done :)

I know it looks a bit long when I explain all the steps, but the sponged areas dry fast and you can do this design more quickly than it looks :)

Well, now my friends are discovering my entry to their challenge, I hope they like it and I hope you do, too :)

Summer Tiger Stamping :)

Hi dear readers !

I hope you spent a great weekend, here we had a lot of sun today, it was really nice after all those rainy days !

Remember, when I showed you China Glaze Verano, I told you I made some stamping on it... Here it is !

I first apply some Essence Sun Downer (Return to Paradise LE from Summer 2010) on the tips with a sponge, allowed it to dry and finally stamp a tiger print from plate m69 with Konad Special Polish in Black.

I love that look !

I bought that plate on Born Pretty Store for only 2.99$ ! It's not real Konad but it's a design you can find on their plates too.

I must admit I was affraid of the quality for such a price, but it was finally a good surprise, the designs are well engraved and work fine :)
When you know that in Belgian stores they sell Konad plates for about 10-11$, BPS ones are very good deals !
